"Ni Tú Ni Yo", "Amor, Amor, Amor", "Us", "El Anillo", "Dinero", "Te Gusté", "Limitless"... though quadruple-threat Jennifer Lopez has been sprinkling new releases out since 2017, ahead of her highly anticipated ninth studio album, unfortunately only one has made any impact on the U.S. charts ("Dinero" peaked at #80 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2018).
This has caused quite some confusion as to what a new album from the "On The Floor" hitmaker would sound like or be comprised of when it finally receives a release date. Initially reported to serve as the singer's official sophomore Spanish-language album, Lopez' latest single steers the planned project in an entirely different direction.
The new "Medicine" finds Lopez teaming up once again with rapper French Montana (the pair previously collaborated on "Same Girl" and "I Luh Ya Papi") on the upbeat, horn-driven track, warning potential suitors she will not put up with any disrespect.
As other publications have noted, the effort takes listeners back to the days of "Get Right" and "Do It Well". Infectious brass instrumentals and prominent percussion supporting an aggressive vocal delivery and sass-loaded subject matter.
Produced by Stargate (Beyonce, Rihanna, Ne-Yo), the production style differs from the ballad structure of previous release "Limitless", giving Lopez the proper environment to call out a lover for supposed infidelity. But don't fear, the artist doesn't get angry, she gets even. "Who's better? Show me now, who been in my bed and around your homies, oh, I could be a lot, if you don't believe me, I can show ya," she teases on the verses.
While the lyrical content is kept to a bare minimum -- Lopez repeats the exact same verse twice in between a radio-ready, fiery chorus -- the energy of "Medicine" is its main asset and what we've come to expect from the singer/actress/dancer/producer. By the time French Montana jumps in with his commendable addition, repping South Bronx and inspiring to be George Jefferson, he's just putting a cherry on top of a job already well done.
"Medicine" may take some time to fully appreciate. On the surface, the effort is a thin offering when compared to what Lopez has already dished out over the last two years. #JusticeForElAnillo. However, with an earworm of a hook and solid vocals, the track only steamrolls into more fun and repeated airplay potential after the first listen. No matter the opinion, safe to say the busiest woman in show business is certainly keeping herself busy.
