LINDSAY, California (KSEE/KGPE) – More than 1,000 prom dresses will be given away in Tulare County later this month to ensure everyone who wants to go to the end-of-year high school celebration has a dress for the occasion.

The annual giveaway is organized by Sacramento based Vida de Oro Foundation. The non-profit will be bringing the event to Lindsay in just over two weeks. The dresses were donated by Lulus.com.

"We know the struggles that many parents currently face in making ends meet," said President and CEO of the Vida de Oro Foundation Mina Perez. "As a result, some students don't get a chance to attend their prom, which can affect them the rest of their lives."

The Feb. 22 event will be inside John J. Cairns Continuation School at 290 Harvard Avenue. It starts at 10 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m.; all high school students attending need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

15 Winning Vintage Dresses that Wowed at the Oscars - Vogue

The rules of the red carpet have changed. Being a risk-taker is no longer about leaving your knickers at home (Cher); playing peek-a-boo with transparency (Barbra Streisand); or concocting your own outfit (Kim Basinger). Now it's about being green and dressing responsibly. For the 2020 BAFTAs, guests were invited to consider shopping their closets or wearing a sustainable design.

Many of the same talents will be doing the step-and-repeat at the Oscars, where the red carpet has turned green on several notable occasions when stars shone in museum-worthy dresses. Found, not plucked off a rack, a vintage gown is as exclusive as a custom-made ensemble. Plus—and this is a bonus—it has a history and its own narrative. To some extent the wearer needs to adapt to the dress, observe, listen, and invent for it a new expression (a sequel if you will), much like she would adapt to a new role. Encore!

Minnesota 4th-Grade Teacher Dresses His Students for Success - kdhlradio.com

4th-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary in St. Cloud Mike Mathiason has dress shirts, jackets, blazers, and ties hanging around his classroom. That's because every Tuesday is "Dress for Success" day and each of his students get to pick out what business attire they'll wear that day.

Mr. Mathiason told KARE 11, "'When we look good, we perform better.'" That's why he decided early in his teaching career that his wardrobe of choice would be a suit and tie. His students love "Dress for Success" Tuesday.

Student Nimo Dabar was looking at herself in the mirror with a blazer on and said "'It's going to be an awesome day.'" Riyaq Mohamed said, "'Makes me feel special,'" as she also wore a blazer. Jermaine McClure told KARE 11, "'When I wear it, I feel better and I feel like I can get better at math.'" Another student, Muhsin Hussein, even asks Mr. Mathiason if he can wear ties on other days of the week.

After school every Tuesday, Mr. Mathiason brings home the dress clothes and washes them at his home. Some of the clothes have been donated but many of them he purchased himself.

When KARE 11 originally talked about this story they mentioned that Mr. Mathiason could use more dress clothes for his classroom. Many people have shown their support since then. People from California, Florida, and Texas have even reached out. Mr. Mathiason said that his students can't believe how many people saw their story. "'They're like, 'They're sending us this stuff so we can wear it in the classroom,' I think that's been the biggest thing.'"

Community donates dresses to help students attend school dances - KULR-TV

Posted: 06 Feb 2020 12:03 PM PST

HELENA – The Niceness is Priceless Clubs at Helena and Capital High School are accepting gently worn prom dresses and suits for students to shop and borrow for school dances.

This is the third year they have been collecting dresses and it is supported solely by donations from the community. Christina Sieminski, one of the leaders of the Niceness is Priceless Club at Capital High, says seeing the reaction on students faces when they see how nice the dresses are is unforgettable.

"I think sometimes people think they're going to come in and find used or worn dresses that aren't as nice, and their faces really light up when they see the great selection that the community has donated," Sieminski says.

They have collected over 300 dresses throughout the three years of the program and will be collecting them until the end of March. They let students check out dresses with no strings attached, so they aren't required to sign a list or return them if they don't want too. Students outside of the Helena School District have also benefitted from these dentations as well.

If you are interested in donating an item, you can bring it to Helena or Capital High Schools main office between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sieminski says they are in need of shoes and accessories as well as male suits so if you have some laying around make sure to bring them down.
